Harmony of the Modern, Antique and Early Byzantine Mosaic
The idea on the project “Harmony of the Modern, Antique and Early Byzantine Mosaic” was initiated in the autumn of 2001, in the same time when the group “Amethyst” was founded. Balkan Peninsula is full of mosaics from antique and early byzantine period. In the sense of the idea, we have been researching new ways, relying on Via Egnatia, cities - native places of the Roman and Byzantine emperors, in which remains of wonderful buildings, unavoidably decorated with mosaics, have always been founded.
In Serbia, the project included localities of Felix Romuliana (Zajecar), Mediana (Nis), Justiniana Prima (Caricin Grad, near Leskovac) and Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica). In Montenegro, exhibitions were held in Bar and Perast, in Macedonia in the Gallery of the National Museum of Bitola (Heraclea). We have also visited some other localities, like Stobi and Ohrid.
We have had different activities on every step: lectures on mosaic, artistic workshops, exchange of information with colleagues and experts included in our project (archeologists, art historians, technologists etc…) We were traveling all over those localities and like old explorers created a new point of view and additionally animated people to work more and to see properly their cultural heritage.
